He/ Him
Samuel Avery is a photographer and filmmaker from Connecticut whose work centers on trans visibility, storytelling, and self-representation. Beginning his photographic practice in 2020 alongside his own transition, Avery’s work is deeply personal—rooted in lived experience and the urgency of being seen.
Through self-portraiture, he documents his own evolving identity, using the camera as both a tool of reflection and a means of advocacy. These images extend beyond the personal, becoming a foundation for a broader practice that captures the diverse experiences of trans individuals through editorial photography. Avery’s work challenges invisibility and misrepresentation, offering nuanced, intimate portrayals that affirm trans lives with dignity and complexity. By turning lived experience into visual narrative, he creates space for recognition, empathy, and connection—both within the community and beyond it.
