Croatia

In this haunting chapter of A Short History of the Continent, Cal Fraser presents a raw and tender image of care, exhaustion, and quiet intimacy. Set against a barren, almost apocalyptic shoreline, two men are depicted in an embrace that is at once nurturing and tragic. Dressed in minimal garments and rendered in earthy tones, they seem suspended between moments of survival and surrender. The crouching figure supports the other’s limp body, holding what appears to be dried grass or flowers — a fragile symbol of life or mourning. This deeply human image echoes religious Pietà iconography, reimagined through a queer, post-war lens.
