I Went to the Secret Bedrooms

“Στες Κάμαρες Επήγα Τες Κρυφές (I Went to the Secret Bedrooms)” is a 110 × 75 cm charcoal drawing that takes its title from a verse by C.P. Cavafy, the iconic queer Greek poet whose intimate writings traced desire, secrecy, and the spaces where queer lives unfolded beyond public view.

By bringing Cavafy’s line directly into the work, Nico Giannoulis creates a dialogue across time—connecting a contemporary queer body with the coded, whispered confessions of the early 20th century. The monumental nude, rendered through deep chiaroscuro, becomes both a landscape of pleasure and a site of vulnerability, echoing the poet’s exploration of hidden rooms and forbidden encounters.

The piece reflects on what it means to inhabit desire privately yet defiantly, turning secrecy into a space of truth, memory, and queer lineage.
