The Creation of Papi

The Creation of Papi

The Creation of Papi is Gross Kramer’s playful queer reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s iconic Creation of Adam. While the composition and the nearly touching hands remain, the classical figures are transformed into the artist’s signature characters: soft, large, hairy bodies rendered in a bold cartoon-like style.

Through flat colors, clean outlines, and humorous exaggeration, Kramer reimagines a foundational religious scene as a celebration of queer kinship, chosen family, and tender masculinity. The divine moment becomes intimate and accessible, expressing belonging, connection, and the beauty of bodies often overlooked or excluded from traditional art history.

The clarity of the forms and graphic precision of the piece also give it a contemporary digital aesthetic, allowing the work to seamlessly cross between physical and digital spaces without losing its visual impact.
