Algorithm of Hate

Algorithm of Hate

Algorithm of Hate confronts the digital systems that amplify hostility toward queer and trans communities. In this haunting portrait, Samuel Avery is illuminated by the cold glow of a phone, while a flood of hateful messages surrounds him—projected, inescapable, and overwhelming.

Created in response to shifting content moderation policies on major platforms, the work reveals how algorithms reward engagement at any cost, often prioritizing outrage and harm over safety. For queer creators, visibility becomes double-edged: posts gain traction not through support, but through waves of abuse.

Avery exposes this toxic cycle from lived experience, transforming personal vulnerability into a sharp critique of digital culture. The image captures a moment of isolation within hyperconnectivity—a space where identity is constantly scrutinized, attacked, and commodified.

Algorithm of Hate is both a warning and a call for accountability, urging viewers to reconsider the systems that shape what we see—and at whose expense.
