Kiss of the Beast draws on Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872) to explore queer horror through the coded history of lesbian desire. In this black-and-white digital illustration, Carmilla looms over Laura in a scene charged with both intimacy and menace. Their positioning deliberately blurs the line between vampiric attack and erotic encounter, revealing how female same-sex desire has historically been framed as something dangerous, predatory, and monstrous.
Albaraciii uses strong contrast, theatrical shadow, and stylised linework to expose the fears projected onto lesbian desire within gothic literature. Carmilla’s shadowed form suggests the “beast” hidden beneath seduction, while Laura’s shadow hints at an unconscious awareness of what this encounter means. The work reflects on how queer desire has so often been represented through horror — not simply as longing, but as threat — and reclaims that visual language as a powerful site of critique, tension, and interpretation.
