8th World Wonder
8th World Wonder is a portrait of remembrance dedicated to Deshon Smith’s father, who died on 8 August 2026. In the hours before his death, he repeatedly named the date and insisted he would still be present on the eighth. Smith holds that promise as both personal memory and visual structure. Beneath the central portrait, members of the immediate family and grandchildren emerge through the underpainting, forming a surrounding field of connection. Their presence reflects the family his father regarded as his greatest joy and lasting legacy. Vivid colour transforms grief into continued presence: the painting mourns a life while affirming the relationships that remain active beyond loss.
