Resting Boy
Resting Boy is part of Archan Mukherjee’s photographic project Myth, Mystery & Men. Inspired by François Boucher’s The Blonde Odalisque, the work reimagines the reclining figure through a queer South Asian perspective, replacing the original painting’s racialised, misogynistic, and voyeuristic gaze with intimacy and self-possession.
The subject is presented not as an exotic object for consumption, but as a person inhabiting rest, sensuality, and vulnerability on his own terms. Through this reversal, Mukherjee questions who has historically been allowed to appear desirable, relaxed, and fully visible within art.
