Body Study I

An isolated nude figure sits beneath a rhinestone veil, suspended within Nichols’ characteristic field of deep black. The adornment both reveals and obscures, shifting the male body away from the conventions of physique photography and into a space of ambiguity. Part of an ongoing investigation into adornment, sexuality and self-presentation, Body Study I treats the portrait as a liminal image: neither documentary nor fantasy, but a site where desire, vulnerability and the performance of identity can be examined.
