The Man I Would Become
Drawing on the dramatic light of Caravaggio and language from The Velvet Rage, The Man I Would Become stages self-portraiture as an encounter with inherited shame. The figure appears suspended between liberation and the emotional structures formed in childhood: aware of the life he wants to inhabit, yet conscious of the work still required to reach it. By combining photographic image and text, Nichols turns a private struggle into a wider reflection on queer self-making, vulnerability and the difficult labour of becoming.
