The Dreadful Weight of Hope
Printed as a cyanotype directly onto the final page of James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room, The Dreadful Weight of Hope brings image and queer literary memory into physical contact. A nude male figure turns away from the viewer, echoing the novel’s closing meditation on concealment and the cost of living against one’s truth. The fragile book page becomes both surface and witness, carrying a portrait shaped by shame, loss and consequence. Nichols uses the historical blue process to ask what remains when an inauthentic life can no longer be sustained.
