Bullying

Bully explores the violence of homophobic bullying through a portrait that changes depending on how it is viewed. Under normal light, the figure appears composed and self-possessed, surrounded by an intensely vibrant colour. Under ultraviolet light, however, hidden insults and traces of physical violence emerge across the work, revealing what remains invisible at first sight. This transformation reflects the experience of many queer young people who learn to conceal harassment, fear and vulnerability behind an apparently ordinary exterior. By making violence literally visible only under a different light, Bully confronts the viewer with what society often fails — or chooses not — to see.
